We Are American Roads

American Roads owns and operates transportation infrastructure that connects people to business and brings communities together. We are successful in part due to the strong partnerships we have with governments, industry, and communities.

We’ve owned/operated the international tunnel connecting Detroit, Michigan to Windsor, Ontario since it’s opening in 1930. We continue managing the tunnel operations today. American Roads owns and operates four toll assets in Alabama that have been under our leadership since 2006 as well as providing tolling services to an asset in New Jersey.

We have experience in the development, construction, and management of public-private assets. Our strengths include servicing technology to ensure our assets' success, experience in border stakeholder management, border and site security, and government and local community relations. We have been providing local staffing and employment opportunities since 1930.

Our management team holds an impressive track record in the transportation industry, and we employ more than 80 permanent positions across five cities and two states. Our diverse workforce comes from the areas we serve in Alabama, Detroit, and Ontario.

Core Values

In all we do, our core values drive our success.

Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance

Our Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) values shape how we operate. As a result of our ESG commitments, we prioritize the health and safety of our employees, contractors, and the traveling public while promoting the welfare and prosperity of the communities we serve.

We have integrated several environmental support initiatives at American Roads, which have recently included a recycling program at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, LED and solar navigation light upgrades at our facilities, as well as other energy efficient equipment upgrades. We are also committed to measuring and offsetting our carbon footprint. In pursuit of this goal, American Roads is undergoing the process of shifting our energy use to renewable sources. As of January 2024, the Detroit Windsor Tunnel has increased enrollment in DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program to attribute 100% of the electriity use to renewable energy.

More information about our ESG commitments can be found in our ESG & Initiative Committee Charter.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At American Roads, we are committed to creating a culture of belonging. We celebrate uniqueness and believe that our strength comes from our diversity. We ensure inclusion for all our employees, customers, partners, and the communities we serve.

Our DEI efforts have been focused on gaining knowledge and obtaining an understanding to ensure that equity and inclusion have been woven throughout our corporate practices and policies. As a result, we established a diverse group of voices and formed a DEI Committee who has led our commitment to creating a culture of belonging for everyone. Recent accomplishments include creating a companywide newsletter, “Healthy Roads” initiatives (mental/physical health campaigns), implementation of a parental leave policy, and the completion of a 3-year DEI action plan with the assistance of a third-party.
